2 Year Wedding Anniversary

Happy 4th of July weekend to all of you! For me this weekend is particularly special, as in addition to celebrating our nation I am also celebrating Alex’s birthday and our 2 year wedding anniversary! I thought I would share a few of my favorite pictures from our day and some details from our wedding. While I wouldn’t say our wedding had ‘theme’ exactly I wanted the day to feel fanciful, romantic, airy, whimsy, and elegant. All of the photos are by the incredible Aubrey who is an insanely-talented entrepreneur and I am lucky to also call her my friend! I’m going to share these photos and some of my original wedding inspiration over on my Pinterest board.

It is crazy to think that two years has already gone by since that perfect day! Whenever someone asks what it is like to be married so young – and especially in New York people definitely do ask – I always say that to me it feels like the most natural thing in the world. Alex and I have been together since high school and known each other since middle school. I feel so lucky to have grown up with my life partner and to know that we have so much left to accomplish together.

Beyond the sappy stuff, our wedding was in Ann Arbor, Michigan. We are both from a small town near by and spent plenty of time in Ann Arbor growing up. The town has so many cute churches and unique venues for a wedding – plus it is a fun, unique city to show off to out of town friends. We were married at the First Congregational Church and had our reception across the street at the University of Michigan Museum of Art. Our wedding was on the smaller side with 80 people which was perfect for the museum especially. A tip of mine to brides is that the smaller your wedding is the more unique venues can accommodate your party! The law quad on the campus made a great backdrop for photos with just the right blend of nature and gothic architecture to give the pictures the romantic feel I wanted.

My dress is by Monique Lhuillier from her Bliss 2015 line. If you are shopping in Michigan, I got my dress from Roma Sposa who has the most amazing selection of gowns. I brought pictures of what I had in mind – light, airy, romantic, full skirt – and right away they showed me this dress and I knew! I also had a great experience at Bridal Couture in Plymouth and Elizabeth’s Bridal Manor in Northville. The veil they showed me with the dress was very expensive and I was able to find a near replica on Veiled Beauty that looks great with the dress. I modeled the length of my veil of off Kate Middleton’s – what girl wasn’t taking notes during that wedding? – and I thought the length was dramatic without taking away from the dress.

I did do the something old, new, borrowed, and blue tradition. My something old were my silver pumps that I had originally bought for a college formal. I highly recommend this one as it made it so they were well broken in and I could stay in the shoes all night. My something new was my dress which my grandma so generously gifted to me. My something borrowed is my hair piece which my sister wore for her wedding. My something blue was a handkerchief that had my new initials stitched on. I didn’t want to jinx anything by monograming things before I was married so this felt like the perfect first one!

Picking two venues that had such strong decor already meant I didn’t have to do much in the way of decorating, allowing me to focus more of the budget on our flowers with the amazing Holly of Sweet Pea Floral Designs. The flowers at our wedding were packed with meaning including ivy on the chairs for Alex’s recent graduation from Cornell, oranges in the centerpieces for my graduation from Syracuse, and a single pink carnation in my bouquet for my sorority Gamma Phi Beta.

A few of my favorite memories from the day: watching my Scottish uncle teach Alex how to open champagne bottles with a saber – to everyone’s delight! Spending the whole morning with my closest friends, mom, and mother-in-law as we got ready. Seeing four young trees decorate the beginning and end of the aisle that I knew would be planted in Alex’s parents’ backyard after – and I am happy to report they are all doing well! Exiting the church to the rose petal toss and finding petals in my dress all evening.

It truly was the best day of my life! I say this always to engaged couples – especially those who are thinking about not having a traditional wedding and reception – that your wedding is really the only chance to ever have everyone you love in one room. Seeing my childhood bestie dance the night away with my sorority roommate was such a special sight. Meeting some of Alex’s California relatives for the first time instantly bonded me with them and made me feel like part of their family. Sharing that special day with far flung friends always makes them feel close to my heart. That in itself would have been enough to make it the best day, but coupled with finally starting my life with Alex – our day made me happier than I knew was possible!

Office-Ready Summer Shirtdress

I have always been drawn to classic, polished pieces with a feminine flair and thus you will find more than a few shirt dresses in my wardrobe. An obvious choice for a working girl in warm weather, the shirt dress delivers a fuss-free, pulled-together ensemble. Bonus for my fellow heavy sleepers — they are some of my speediest outfit options and a thick leather belt hides a multitude of wrinkles. I am also a fan of this linen blend that can handle a New York City heat wave on my way into the office.

These sandals were my prize from the winter Shopbop sale and have been tucked away since, waiting to see the light of day. While the heel is a little higher than I anticipated, they still make for a great go-to sandal.

I first saw this “tied” leather belt on Carly and rushed to the Loft site to buy it. I used to take one of my husband’s leather belts to knot around flowy dresses but between suffering from the knot pushing into my stomach all day and having to coordinate outfits with Alex in the morning a new belt for my wardrobe seemed like the clear choice. I haven’t gotten a chance to wear it much yet but I have a feeling it will show up in a few posts this summer.

I’m always looking for your tips on easy, commute-proof outfits so if you have any tips I’d love to hear them in the comments below!
