Day and Night

outfit details

J.Crew Cape old, similar here and here // Endless Rose Tiered Ruffle Sleeve Sweater // J.Crew Pixie Pant // H&M Ankle Boots // Kate Spade Pearl Stud Earring

For my city gals out there you will know this story all too well: you wake up at 6:30 am, pull on your gym clothes, pack up your work outfit and head out the door to get some zen from a 7 am yoga class. After class you shower, change, grab a juice, and hop on the train to make it to your desk by 9:30 am. In the afternoon a friend texts you asking if you want to come with to an afterwork event. You agree – of course! At 7 pm you meet her at that trendy new gallery in SoHo to see an exhibition with a glass of wine in hand. You then decide to grab dinner with her in the neighborhood. You are on the train at 9:30 pm and head back uptown hoping to hit the pillow by 11 pm.

What ensemble could possibly stand up through all of this?

On an average day in the city I need a lot from one outfit: it has to be warm, the shoes have to be puddle proof, my clothes can’t wrinkle in my bag while I’m at the gym, and they have to be office appropriate, fun enough that I don’t feel stuffy at an evening event, and comfortable enough for a 14-hour-day without access to my closet.

Behold my foolproof outfit equation: a detailed sweater, Pixie pants, and a low-heeled bootie.

A collection of warm sweaters is a mainstay for New York living. I look for pieces that have a unique touch like beaded collars, interesting textures, or a ruffle accent. This keeps things office friendly in coverage but allows them to translate well to an after work event.

There is nothing in my wardrobe with a better cost-per-wear ratio than my J.Crew Pixie pants. More structured than a legging with all of the comfort of one, these are perfect for pairing with boots. I own four different pairs in varying colors and designs.

These little black booties are perfect for long days on the go. The dark color prevents them from showing wear, the thick heel makes it easy to run around, and season after season they will always be in style.

So next time you are staring into your closet with a long day ahead of you – think of my day-to-night outfit equation and get on your way!
